    The IRAC Method

    IIssue

What to do: Identify the legal issue raised by the facts.

Example: "The issue is whether a valid contract was formed."

Pro Tip: State issues as questions or declarative statements. Be specific but concise. Identify ALL issues, including sub-issues.

    RRule

What to do: State the applicable legal rule, statute, or test.

Example: "A contract requires an offer, acceptance, and consideration."

Pro Tip: State the general rule first, then any exceptions or elements. Include relevant case law if applicable. Be accurate but don't over-explain.

    AApplication

What to do: Apply the rule to the specific facts of the problem.

Example: "Here, Party A made an offer when they sent the letter. Party B accepted by signing and returning it. Consideration exists because..."

Pro Tip: This is the most important section. Use specific facts. Show your reasoning. Address counter-arguments. This earns the most points.

    CConclusion

What to do: State your conclusion based on your analysis.

Example: "Therefore, a valid contract was formed."
